White House Welcomes Liberian Peace Agreement

August 18 accord provides an "unprecedented opportunity"

The White House welcomed the signing in Accra, Ghana, August 18 of a Liberian peace agreement. Following is the text of the White House statement:

Statement by the Press Secretary

Liberian Peace Agreement Signed in Accra, Ghana

The United States welcomes the signing of the peace agreement today in Accra, Ghana by Liberia's Government, rebel groups, political parties, and leaders of Liberia's civil society. The United States appreciates the efforts of ECOWAS Chair Kufuor, ECOWAS Executive Secretary Shambas, and the mediator of the talks, General Abubakar. The United States expects all parties to abide by the terms of the agreement and to live up to their commitments to stop all hostilities, to fully support the formation of the new government, and to ensure full humanitarian access. This historic agreement provides the people of Liberia and its new leadership an unprecedented opportunity to begin the process of healing and reconciliation toward a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Liberia.
