BURUNDI: Thousands, fleeing fighting, receive emergency food aid
NAIROBI, 14 August 2003 (IRIN) - A total of 12,000 people uprooted by recent fighting from their homes in Mutambu Commune, Bujumbura Rural Province, have now received 30-day food rations, the UN World Food Programme in Burundi reported on Wednesday.
It said that the 194.8 mt of food was delivered on Tuesday and on Wednesday to Kinema School, about 2.5 km from the distribution point of Mubone. The initial distribution planned to begin on Monday was postponed due to bad conditions along the tract leading to Mubone.
WFP reported that following rebel attacks between 11 and 12 August on the capital, Bujumbura, the Forces nationales de liberation rebels moved toward Mutambu Commune where they fought the army. WFP said this caused some 4,000 internally displaced persons, who received 30-day food rations on 22 and 23 July.
