13 August 2003
NATO SFOR Press Release
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina – This afternoon SFOR conducted an operation intended to detain Ratko Mladic who is under indictment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for war crimes.
The operation took place in the vicinity of Kasindo near Sarajevo, at the home of Ratko Mladic’s mother who passed away yesterday. While SFOR regrets the timing of the operation, it is in the best interests of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) that SFOR fulfils its mandate. SFOR extends its condolences to the family who cooperated fully during the operation.
This operation did not result in the detention of Ratko Mladic. No military or civilian casualties or injuries were incurred in this operation.
This operation was undertaken with the assistance of the RS MUP and was in accordance with SFOR’s authority to detain PIFWCs. SFOR, working with the International Community, will continue to do its part to ensure that PIFWCs go to the Hague. SFOR will continue to carry out its mandate in a firm and unbiased manner.
PIFWCs at large represent a major threat to sustained peace in BiH and ultimately to the country’s progress and development. They rob the country and the people of their future. The International Community expects all signatories to the Dayton Peace Accord to fulfil their obligation under the Accord, to include bringing PIFWCs and their supporters to justice.
Details of Mr. Mladic’s indictment can be found on the ICTY website.
