INTRO: One U-S soldier was killed Tuesday in Iraq and coalition forces captured two key members of Saddam Hussein's former regime. Kirk Troy has the details from Baghdad.

TEXT: A U-S military spokesman said one soldier was killed and two others were wounded in an attack west of Baghdad.

The attack happened in the town of Ramadi when three bombs were detonated near a U-S convoy.

U-S forces also say they captured a former bodyguard of Saddam Hussein and a divisional chief of staff from the Republican Guard near Tikrit.

In the capital itself, a U-S military spokesman said, one Iraqi man was killed after he threw two grenades at a U-S checkpoint on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in southern Iraq, British forces say calm has returned to Basra after weekend riots over electric power and fuel shortages. Coalition authorities say they have begun restoring electricity to the city and were distributing fuel.

The British army said it had brought in 24 million liters of fuel from its own stocks for distribution in Basra.

Also Monday, the president of the U-S-picked Governing Council announced the interim government had postponed appointing cabinet ministers for three weeks. Ibrahim al-Jaafari, council president for August, said a 25-member committee would be formed soon to choose the constitutional assembly, but he gave no dates. (Signed)
