NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The crew of USS Firebolt (PC 10) will return to Norfolk Aug. 12, from a seven-month deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
During the deployment, Firebolt conducted force protection operations in the high-mine threat environment of the Northern Arabian Gulf, to include the interception of two tugs and a barge carrying 86 mines heading out to deeper water right before the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Firebolt also provided force protection efforts through mine-infested waters to allow the Sir Galahad, a British auxiliary ship loaded with food and other humanitarian items, to travel safely to Iraq.
To keep Patrol Coastal ships in theatre and economically maintain presence, the ship Firebolt will remain on station in the northern Arabian Gulf and the crew of USS Shamal (PC 13) will take command of the ship.
