INTRO: A bomb has exploded in the capital city of Laos, injuring at least eight people. V-O-A'S Jennifer O'Neil reports from our Asia News Center in Hong Kong.

TEXT: The bomb - hidden in a metal trash bin - exploded near a bus station in the Lao capital Monday.

No one has claimed responsibility, and officials are still investigating the motive.

There have been a series of violent attacks in Laos during recent months. Most, however, have been in remote areas where Hmong rebels have been fighting the Communist government for more than 25 years.

In April, at least 12 people were killed and dozens injured when gunmen fired on a bus in the north, where Hmong rebels are active.

The government blamed that attack and previous ones on "bandits." (SIGNED)
