Tajikistan: Civil War-Era Land Mines Destroyed
Lyuar, Tajikistan; 30 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Tajikistan destroyed some 400 antipersonnel land mines as part of a program to rid the country of thousands of mines left over from the 1992-97 civil war.
Deputy Prime Minister Saidamir Zukhurov said at the Lyuar military firing range yesterday that Tajikistan is meeting commitments outlined in the Ottawa Convention banning land-mine use.
Zukhurov thanked the office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Tajikistan for coordinating and encouraging financial aid for the de-mining project.
Zukhurov also thanked a special Swiss fund and the Canadian government for providing some $700,000 for the project.
