
Hamilton Sundstrand adds first Italian supplier for Pratt & Whitney F135 engine , British firm to provide inlet and exhaust monitoring

Microtecnica, a business unit of Hamilton Sundstrand, has become the first company in Italy under contract to support the Joint Strike Fighter Program. Headquartered in Turin, Italy, Microtecnica will provide the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine’s anti-ice system.
Hamilton Sundstrand also has announced that Smiths Aerospace Electronic Systems - Southampton will provide prognostic health sensors that monitor inlet and exhaust debris for the F135. Hamilton Sundstrand has overall responsibility for the F135 engines electronics suite, controls, externals, gearbox and accessories.
As previously announced, Fokker Elmo of the Netherlands will provide engine harnesses. These three suppliers will provide more than $12 million (U.S.) in hardware and services to the systems design and development (SDD) phase of the program.
“The F-35 is truly a global effort, and we are very pleased these suppliers will be working with us to meet and exceed our customer expectations for this important new program,” said Joe Triompo, president of Engine and Control Systems for Hamilton Sundstrand. “We continue to evaluate potential suppliers in Europe, and are working closely with a number of companies in England, the Netherlands and Italy. We expect to be adding more European-based suppliers to the F135 engine systems team in the future.”
In addition to engine systems for the Pratt & Whitney F135, Hamilton Sundstrand provides the Lockheed Martin fighter with the electric system, as well as electronic units that control primary and secondary flight actuation. The company has not yet announced its supplier teams for the electric system and actuation controllers.
Hamilton Sundstrand’s total content on the program is about $1.8 million per shipset, and estimates that the program could generate as much as $10 billion in revenues over the next 20 years.

Smiths Aerospace Electronic Systems - Southampton is located in Eastleigh, Hampshire, United Kingdom, and is an aerospace industry leader in comprehensive data analysis for prognostics, diagnostics and decision support.
Microtecnica manufactures mechanical and avionics systems, including air management and thermal control systems, primary and secondary actuation systems, fuel controls and other onboard computers and electronic control units at its facilities in Turin, Luserna and Brugherio. It recently completed the purchase of the Hydraulic Systems Division of Magnaghi Aerospace, bringing its employment to about 750.
