V CORPS UNIT SOLVING IRAQI COMMUNITY'S PROBLEMS 'ONE BITE AT A TIME'

V Corps Press Release

By Spc. Ryan Smith 372nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

BAGHDAD, IRAQ -- Soldiers from V Corps's 1st Armored Division met with community representatives here to discuss important community issues.

Members of a neighborhood advisory council from the Salhiya neighborhood met with troops from A Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment to talk about issues ranging from security to repairs to municipal services, said Capt. Scott C. Nauman, A Company commander.

The meeting was the second between the council and the company. During the first, Nauman said, the community representatives identified neighborhood problems. The company within is responsible for restoring the Salhiya area. Lack of electricity, water, sewage and trash removal are the community's top problems, the captain said.

The intent of the meetings is to identify problems and look for solutions. Nauman's goal is for the community leaders to be able to take responsibility for solving their own problems.

It's not always an easy process. One of the suggestions made by a member of the council was to have the Office of Coalition Provisional Authority purchase a generator for each of Baghdad's five million residents. But the meetings do produce results, Nauman said. Security and traffic problems have improved, and illegal gasoline sales in the neighborhood have been reduced.

There are still many problems to be solved, but Nauman said he views each improvement as a success.

"You eat an elephant one bite at a time," he said.
