STN Atlas laser visual system for Tornado flight simulators
07/11/2003
One of the first customers to use the new AVIOR laser projection system of STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH in flight simulators is the German Air Force. The German contracting authorities BWB have selected a working group consisting of the Rheinmetall DeTec subsidiary STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH, Bremen and CAE Elektronik, Stoltenberg, to integrate the visual system in the flight and tactical simulators for Tornado aircraft of the GAF training center in Hollomann, New Mexico, USA.
Pilots and weapon systems officers of the German Air Force and Navy are given their basic training at this US site. It is planned to take the system into operation in mid 2005.
The conversion of the first Tornado simulator is a milestone in terms of efficiency and effectiveness of simulator flight training, giving new perspectives for the quality of training. This display system - giving an out-of-window view - used for tactical and flight training purposes will help to considerably minimize the risk of low-level and night-time flying to man and machine, and therefore reduce overall training expenses.
The simulator with dome projection technology (300 x 120 degree field of view) will be equipped with a 13 channel AVIOR laser display system from STN Atlas Elektronik. The related "Medallion S" image generator will be delivered and integrated by CAE. Thanks to the laser technology, AVIOR offers unlimited focus depth, a high variety of colors, absolute color stability and constant color convergence. As a digital system, the fail-safety of AVIOR is extremely high with minimum maintenance requirements.
The system is very compact (the projection head weighs approx. eight kilos) and has small installation dimensions due to the separation of projection head and laser source. This allows the design and installation of light-weight, compact Full Flight Simulators (FFS) with electrical motion systems.
