Officials from the United States and 10 other nations have agreed to begin joint military exercises and share intelligence, as part of a worldwide campaign aimed at curbing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

The statement was issued Thursday at the end of a two-day meeting in Brisbane, Australia. Participants agreed to move quickly on measures to impede the trafficking of banned weapons. However, they did not set a specific timetable to put such measures into action.

As first steps, the countries pledged to share intelligence and begin military exercises as soon as possible. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has said officials must determine whether there is legal authority to act against nations that transport banned weapons.

Australia, Japan and eight European countries also participated in the talks in Brisbane.
