VLADIVOSTOK, Russia
-- The amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and the
guided missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82) departed Vladivostok,
Russia, July 7 after a four-day goodwill port visit.
While there, Sailors from the two ships
and embarked Marines from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force were able
to sightsee, shop, relax and interact with their Russian Navy
counterparts and the local population.
The Sailors and Marines also participated
in a wreath laying ceremony to pay tribute to the Russian Sailors who
perished during World War II, and had the opportunity to tour a Russian
naval ship. The Russian sailors also got to tours of the U.S. ships, as
did government officials and numerous other guests, including children
from a local orphanage.
Fort McHenry is forward deployed to
Sasebo, Japan, as part of the Navy's only permanently forward deployed
amphibious force, and is commanded by Cmdr. Adrian J. Jansen. Lassen is
homeported in San Diego, and commanded by Cmdr. H. D. Wetherald.
