VLADIVOSTOK, Russia -- Two U.S. Navy ships arrived in Vladivostok, Russia, in the early morning hours of July 3, for a planned goodwill port visit to strengthen the growing military relationship between the two countries.

The Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82) and Whidbey Island class dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and their approximately 1,100 combined crewmembers will be afforded the opportunity to sightsee, shop and enjoy some rest and recreation around the city.

U.S. Sailors and Marines will also participate in exchanges with their Russian counterparts including several sporting events.

Joining the two ships for the port visit are embarked Marines from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

The 8,400-ton Lassen is based in San Diego, and commanded by Cmdr. H. D. Wetherald. The 16,000-ton Fort McHenry is permanently forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan, as part of Amphibious Force, U.S. Seventh Fleet, and is commanded by Cmdr. Adrian J. Jansen.

This is the second consecutive year Fort McHenry has made a July port visit to Russia.
