Class 123 graduates from Test Pilot School

NAVAIR PATUXENT RIVER, MD-The U.S. Naval Test Pilot School held graduation ceremonies for class 123 in the Cedar Point Officers' Club here June 13. Thirty-three students completed the intense 10-month course and were designated as test pilots, test naval flight officers and test engineers.

Astronaut John W. Young was the guest speaker. Rear Adm. Tim Heely, NAWCAD commander and NAVAIR assistant commander for research and engineering, presented diplomas to each graduate. Graduates included members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, civil service engineers, and international students from Germany and Singapore.

Professor Max Platzer, U.S. Naval Post Graduate School, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, presented master's degrees to five cooperative agreement students. They are Lt. Joseph G. Buckler, Lt. Bradley E. Brewer, Lt. Robert L. Byers, Lt. Jeffrey J. Carty and Lt. Justin M. Verville.

Retired Capt. Michael Cosgrove, vice president of the Patuxent River Council of the Navy League of the United States, presented the Outstanding Student Award to Army Maj. Scott J. Rauer. Cosgrove also presented the Sid Sherby Leadership Award to Army Maj. Brian L. Thompson, class 123 leader. Thompson was also presented the Outstanding Development Phase II Award from Royal Navy Lt. Cmdr. Paul Edwards, USNTPS rotary wing instructor, on behalf of the Empire Test Pilot School.

The curriculum at TPS is divided into three courses of instruction. Twenty-two students completed the requirements for the engineering test pilot course. The new test pilots are Naval Reserve Lt. Cmdr. Alekxander P. McGuiness; Navy Lts. Buckler, Eric M. Buus, Byers, Clark C. Childers, Daniel P. Covelli, David G. Duff, Scott D. Keller, James R. Mires and Jonathon R. Murphy; Marine Corps Majs. Michael E. Dehner, William M. Sloan, Shaun C. Spang and Scott P. Suckow; Army Majs. John O. Nugent, Rauer, Thompson and Charles S. Walls IV; Air Force Maj. Monte R. Cannon; Coast Guard Lt. Robert B. Barthelmes; German Air Force Maj. Markus Ruedinger and Royal Singapore Airforce Capt. Alvin Lim Jin Sew.

Seven students completed the engineering test flight officer course. They are Navy Lts. Brewer, Carty, Martin B. Fuerst, Blaine S. Lorimer, Sean D. Opitz, Verville and Kevin J. Watkins.

Four students fulfilled the requirements for the test project-engineering course. They are Navy civil service employees Joseph L Ferguson II, Aric A. Jenkins, William J. Lang and Kenneth R. Senechal.
