NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- More than 2,400 Sailors and Marines assigned to the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) will return home soon after being deployed five months in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.
Set to arrive off the coast of Onslow Beach, N.C., June 28, Kearsarge will first offload more than 1,200 Marines from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade before arriving at Naval Station Norfolk June 30.
Kearsarge served as the flagship for Amphibious Task Force - East during the deployment. Additionally, Kearsarge was tasked with providing support to the President during his summits with Arab leaders in Eqypt and Jordan.
During her initial trip home, Kearsarge was diverted to head down the western coast of Africa to support Operation Shining Express, an operation to aid in the potential evacuation of U.S. citizens from Liberia.
