Kenyan anti-corruption authorities want to question former President Daniel arap Moi about a scandal involving the disappearance of millions of dollars in public funds.
The officials said Tuesday they want to know whether Mr. Moi ordered state-run companies to make deposits into the now-defunct Euro Bank before it collapsed.
The Nairobi-based bank was declared insolvent this year, because of what investigators call improper financial transactions by its directors. The bank lost millions of dollars in investors' money, including that of state-owned companies.
Mr. Moi's lawyer, Mutula Kilonzo, has met with investigators, who want the former president to make a statement about his involvement with the bank. He said Mr. Moi never ordered anyone to pump money into the failed bank. The investigators have already questioned several government officials in connection with the scandal.
Mr. Moi's KANU party lost power for the first time since Kenya's independence in 1963 in last December's general elections. Former Vice President Mwai Kibaki won the presidency on a strong anti-corruption platform.
