Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has ruled out a peace deal with the Palestinians until the Palestinian Authority cracks down on militant groups behind a spate of deadly attacks on Israel.
Speaking Monday to a special session of the Israeli parliament, Mr. Sharon also said Israeli forces will continue attacks on the militant Palestinian group Hamas until attacks on Israel stop.
The Israeli leader spoke as truce talks between Egyptian mediators and Palestinian militant groups continued in Gaza. Neither the Egyptians nor the Palestinians have commented on the talks, and no progress was reported in the negotiations.
However, Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Gaza late Monday afternoon, and was slated to remain there overnight for talks with several Palestinian factions.
Israeli media reports on the Gaza talks said Hamas would consider a cease-fire, if Israel promises to end its policy of targeted killings, incursions and military strikes in Palestinian territory.
