Hamilton Sundstrand captures $100 million contract with Navy for carts used to start aircraft
PARIS, France- Europe, Jun 15, 2003
Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems, based in San Diego, has signed a contract valued at approximately $100 million to supply the U.S. Navy with ground carts used to start aircraft on board ships and at land bases worldwide.
The unit is a derivative of the company’s successful commercial APS 2000 Auxiliary Power Unit installed in the commercial ground cart marketed by company partner Rheinmetall Landsysteme of Kiel, Germany. Airlines and airports around the world use the carts to start and support the pneumatic requirements of commercial aircraft.
The U.S. Navy version of the cart repackages the existing commercial unit into a smaller and lower profile platform that is mountable on the Navy’s shipboard tractors and land-based trailers.
According to Tom Ledgerwood, general manager of defense programs for Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems, this contract culminates more than two years of land and sea trials with the U.S. Navy under the Commercial Operations and Support Savings Initiative (COSSI) cost share program.
Ledgerwood said the Navy placed an initial order for 49 ground carts with follow-on requirements for a total of 354 units over the next four years. The COSSI units are capable of starting all aircraft currently in the U.S. Navy inventory as well as new aircraft being introduced into the fleet.
Potential future applications exist with the U.S. Air Force and international defense forces worldwide, Ledgerwood said.
Hamilton Sundstrand, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), is headquartered in Windsor Locks, Conn., and employs about 16,500 worldwide. Among the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and industrial products, the company designs, manufactures and services aerospace systems and provides integrated systems solutions for commercial, regional, corporate and military aircraft. It is also a major supplier for international space programs.
