CONGO-RWANDA: Kigali, Brazzaville, UN agency sign repatriation pact

NAIROBI, 12 June 2003 (IRIN) - Rwanda, the Republic of Congo (ROC) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have signed an agreement for the voluntary repatriation of Rwandan refugees from the ROC, Radio Rwanda reported.

The tripartite agreement was signed in Brazzaville, the ROC capital, the radio reported on Monday, citing a statement from the Joint Commission for Repatriation and Reintegration of Rwandan Refugees.

The radio reported that the commission's chairman, Shaykh Abdu-Karim Haririmana, represented the Rwandan government during the signing of the agreement. He was in the ROC from 4-7 June, where he visited a refugee camp, Kintele, and held meetings with the refugees, Radio Rwanda reported.

An information officer with the UNHCR in Rwanda, Mika Inamahoro, said on Wednesday about 5,000 Rwandans were believed to be living in different camps in the ROC.
