NAVAL AIR STATION PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- After making a four-day port visit to Naval Air Station Pensacola (NASP), the Navy's newest Aegis guided-missile destroyer, PCU Mustin (DDG 89), headed by Cmdr. Ann Phillips, departed June 9 at approximately 2:45 p.m. The 509.5-foot ship is headed for San Diego, where it will join Commander, Destroyer Squadron 1, and be commissioned in mid-July.
"The service we've gotten from the base (commanding officer, executive officer, Security, to Port Operations) since we've arrived has been the best," said Phillips. "I can't say enough how much it's been appreciated."
While in port at Allegheny Pier, Mustin resupplied and refueled. Some of the 300-plus crew members enjoyed liberty call in the Pensacola area. A reception was held June 6 in the crew's and Mustin's family honor at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, and a second reception June 7 at Seville Quarter (downtown Pensacola).
"Having a ship of this magnitude, especially with the name Mustin, so influential here in Pensacola, has been pretty exciting," said Patrick Nichols, NASP Public Affairs spokesperson. "To be able to look down our pier and see the Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer is nothing short of spectacular."
Some 1,300 invited guests toured Mustin over the weekend.
