Lockheed Martin and Northstar Technical Inc. Manufacturing License Agreement Wins U.S. State Department Approval
ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND And LABRADOR, CANADA, June 9th, 2003 -- Lockheed Martin and Northstar Technical Inc., a division of Northstar Electronics, Inc. of Canada, today announced that the U.S. State Department has approved a Manufacturing License Agreement between the two companies. Under terms of the agreement, Northstar is authorized to manufacture and supply Lockheed Martin with submarine consoles for any use, including export to all countries for which Lockheed Martin holds export licenses. "As an international submarine combat systems integrator, Lockheed Martin will use this agreement with Northstar to more rapidly and efficiently serve our customers' needs," said Chuck Cantello, vice president for Warfare Systems for Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS)-Undersea Systems. "We are very pleased with the U.S. State Department's approval decision, since previously we had to secure authorization separately for each contract, an activity that takes several months."
The two companies have worked together since 1999, when Lockheed Martin awarded Northstar a (U.S.) $2 million contract to fabricate and test fire control consoles for Canada's Victoria class submarines. Since that time, Lockheed Martin has purchased additional consoles from Northstar. "It is extremely important to us that our business partners offer the kind of high quality products that our customers expect," Cantello said. "We are pleased to partner with Northstar which, over the years, has demonstrated that it shares Lockheed Martin's commitment to quality and to our customers' mission success."
"This is an excellent example of how government and industry can work together to achieve a result that is of great benefit to both," said Dr. Wilson Russell, CEO of Northstar. "In this instance, the governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador facilitated discussions between the companies, resulting in an agreement between Lockheed Martin and Northstar that made good business sense and will lead to a long-term, self sustaining business relationship."
