INTRO: Burma's government has stepped up its criticism of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, raising fears that a United Nations envoy will not be able to secure her freedom. Ron Corben in Bangkok has more.

TEXT: Burma's military intelligence chief, Khin Nyunt is blaming pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi for the clash that ended her tour of northern Burma 10 days ago.

In state media, General Khin Nyunt attacked what he called "internal destructive elements" referring to Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy.

The government says four people died in the May 30th clash between pro-government groups and N-L-D supporters. But Burmese dissidents say dozens were killed and many injured - including Aung San Suu Kyi. The N-L-D leader is being detained at an undisclosed location.

General Khin Nyunt's comments followed a meeting with United Nations special envoy Razali Ismail, now in Burma in a bid to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

His aides have indicated Mr. Razali might cut short his visit if he fails to gain access to Aung San Suu Kyi. (Signed)
