Amphibious Task Force East Returns

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines attached to Amphibious Task Force East (ATF-East) will return to Norfolk June 25 and 26.

The ships returning June 25 include the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), the amphibious transport dock ship USS Ponce (LPD 15), amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) and amphibious dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44). The remaining units of ATF-East, the amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2) and the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), will return to Norfolk June 26.

Marines aboard ATF-East ships will disembark and off-load June 22-24, in Onslow Bay, Morehead City, N.C.

The ships deployed in January 2003 and have been away from homeport for five months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
