Eurotraining gathers momentum
Le Bourget, 01 June 2003
The “Eurotraining”-Project proceeds at a good rate. Several steps towards a joint integrated training system solution (Advanced European Jet Pilot Training / AEJPT) have been achieved up to now: the signature of an international governmental MoU, the formation of an industrial consortium and the signature of the contract covering the Feasibility Study in Rome, in December 2002. Twelve European countries commissioned the industry to prepare a comprehensive feasibility study that evaluates all aspects of a joint European approach for training combat aircraft pilots (Eurotraining).
Air Forces and industry have set up an organisation to efficiently perform the Feasibility Study in the multi national, multi companies environment. Five companies jointly lead and conduct the study: Aermacchi, Dassault Aviation, EADS CASA, EADS Deutschland and Saab. This consortium is supported by a large number of other aerospace companies based in the twelve participating nations: Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland.
The first Technical Progress Review Meeting (TPRM), an important milestone of the Contract, gave proof to the participating Air Forces of the progress made. Approx. 35 representatives of the industrial and military side met end of April 2003 at the EADS Military Aircraft facilities in Getafe. During this meeting, the consortium companies presented to the Air Forces of the twelve nations the status of the program and the main progresses achieved to date.
The general objective of the feasibility study is to define possible solutions and their life cycle costs for an integrated Advanced European Jet Pilot Training (AEJPT) system. The study will cover all aspects of advanced jet pilot training including a new trainer aircraft, ground based systems, syllabi, infrastructure and siting, and will also address the technical and commercial implementation. The entire industrial organisation continues to work closely with the participating Air Forces with the clear aim to provide the Eurotraining military customer with an efficient and innovative training system starting in 2010. The future training system will ensure that pilots can be efficiently qualified to meet the needs of the new generations of combat aircraft. In addition, the joint integrated European approach is to guarantee interoperability between the Air Forces cooperating within AEJPT. The Eurotraining project features the ambitious vision of a major step forward in the flying training of future fighter pilots in Europe while also strengthening European cooperation in defense and industry.
