EADS: A Total Service Provider For Military Aircraft
Le Bourget, 01 June 2003
EADS Military Aircraft incorporates all EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (Munich/Madrid) capacities and abilities for the design, development, integration, production and services of high-performance fighter aircraft, manned mission aircraft, Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAV), trainer aircraft and related ground-based equipment. EADS Military Aircraft is the national systems leader for the flying weapon systems of the Air Forces and the Naval Air Arms of Germany and Spain, including retrofit and upgrade programs.
Three main objectives are driving the business strategy of EADS Military Aircraft. As a Military Air Systems Leader the unit is dedicated to acquire and access future European programs and export business. The position as a Total Service Provider shall be strengthened through continous expansion of the services business, including the area of training. And as an integral element of the overall business the aerostructures activities are to be expanded based on the Tier I Supplier Status of Military Aircraft to Airbus.
To fulfill these tasks, EADS Military Aircraft with a work-force of currently more than 7,600 is based on three locations in Southern Germany and one location in Spain: With 3,025 employees at the end of 2002, Ottobrunn near Munich is headquarters and holds responsibility for development and logistics/product support. The Augsburg plant (2,059 employees) is in charge of the production and assembly of aircraft components, including spare parts. Manching (1,640 employees) is performing final assembly, flight test, and repair, maintenance and retrofit activities. In Getafe near Madrid (1,130 employees) development and final assembly work, aircraft maintenance and overhaul as well as upgrades are performed.
In the year 2002 EADS Military Aircraft reported revenues of approx EUR 1.5 billion and an order backlog of approx. EUR 3.3 billion.
The current programs of EADS Military Aircraft include in the fighter aircraft segment
* Eurofighter. EADS Military Aircraft is responsible for systems design (e.g., Flight Control System, ident-attack system, sensor fusion, hydraulics) and flight-testing of two prototype aircraft, single source for the series production of the center fuselage section, the right wing and leading edge slats, final assembly of 180 aircraft for German Air Force as well as 87 aircraft for the Spanish Air Force. Partnered with Alenia Aerospazio and BAE SYSTEMS. After first flights of four production aircraft in Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom in February this year, first deliveries of Eurofighter production aircraft to the air forces are due by mid 2003.
* EF-18A Hornet. Technical Assistance for embedded operational software, design, develop, support and implement a Midlife Upgrade program for the Spanish EF-18 fleet.
* Tornado. Fighter-bomber/reconnaissance/ Electronic Combat & Reconnaissance. Upgrade, overhaul and maintenance for the German Air Force and the German Naval Air Arm.
* Tornado ADV. For the Air Defence Variant (ADV) of the RAF a repair and life-cycle extension program for the center fuselages of 24 aircraft is ongoing.
* F-4 Phantom II. Overhaul and maintenance activities for the German Air Force. First production-standard delivery of a complex avionics upgrade and SLEP F-4 in December 2002 within the Peace Ikarus program of the Hellenic Air Force.
* Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles. Design and technology studies for unhabitated Fifth Generation Air Combat systems. To broaden the European scope in this field, EADS Military Aircraft actively participates in the ETAP (European Technology Acquisition) Program.
* X-31 VECTOR US-German Technology Demonstrator program. EADS Military Aircraft developed the Flight Control System and system components like the Flush Air Data Sensor (FADS). The world’s first successful automatic precision landings with 24° Angle of Attack performed in spring 2003.
in the transport/mission aircraft segment
* A400M. Involved in the development of systems and subsystems for mission management, electronic self-defense, automatic low level flying. Production or rear fuselage section.
* C-160 Transall. Upgrade, overhaul and maintenance for the German Air Force.
* Breguet 1150 Atlantic Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). Overhaul, maintenance and logistics-product support for German Naval Air Arm, tasks performed by Dornier Flugwerft (DFW). For the replacement program MPA-R of those systems of the German and Italian navies , EADS partnered with Alenia has submitted an offer based upon Airbus airframe technology.
* E-3A airborne early-warning aircraft of NATO. Overhaul, maintenance and modernisation programs for NATO’s E-3A fleet under Boeing contract, partly in conjunction with DFW.
in the training systems segment
* Mako HEAT (High Energy Advanced Trainer), advanced trainer and light combat aircraft. Project for a high-performance trainer/lead-in fighter aircraft) extremely cost-efficient thanks to the high specific excess power (SEP) Mako HEAT can handle a wider range of missions than its competitors where operational fighter aircraft are required to practice these training missions.
* Eurotraining. Feasibility study for a new training system for future fighter pilots including a modern trainer aircraft is under way with results to be submitted by end 2003. 12 European nations are involved in the Advanced European Jet Pilot Training (AEJPT) project.
* F-5. Logistic support and upgrade for F-5B of the Spanish Air Force including integration of advanced electronics such as a new mission computer, head-up and multi-function displays.
* C-101 Aviojet. Logistic support for 150 aircraft delivered to four air forces.
* TAMIZ. Logistic support 40 aircraft delivered to the Spanish Air Force.
* ASTA (Aircrew Synthetic Training Aids), the fully-fledged training package for Eurofighter pilots.
* training of aircrews and military maintenance personnel.
* simulation systems and ground-based training aids.
