Coast Guard commissions new San Diego Coast Guard Cutter
US Coast Guard District 11 Release
Release Date: 5/27/2003
SAN DIEGO - The Coast Guard will have a commissioning ceremony for the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Petrel at Coast Guard Activities San Diego on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Petrel is the 50th vessel of the Marine Protector Class of Coast Guard Patrol Boats and is the last to be built in the class. Built in 2002, by Bollinger Shipyards Inc. of Lockport, La, this vessel employs the latest technological advances in navigation and marine technology. A fully integrated electronics suite coordinates radar, satellite navigation, gyrocompass, autopilot and computer generated charts to form a compact but user-friendly command and control system for all of the ship's missions.
A unique stern launch system is employed to deploy the small boat. This new system is vastly superior in safety, speed and manning requirements. Even in inclement weather, the small boat can be safely launched and recovered with a minimal crew on deck. Due to multiple two-person staterooms, the crew can be any combination of male or female, a first for this size vessel. Petrel is one of the most advanced Coastal Patrol Boats in the world and will help the Coast Guard remain the world's premier maritime organization well into the next millennium.
Coast Guard Activities San Diego will commission the Coast Guards' newest San Diego based cutter, the Petrel, at a commissioning ceremony Wednesday. Following the commissioning, the Petrel will be used to conduct search and rescue and law enforcement cases and participate in port security and homeland defense in the waters around San Diego.
