General Dynamics Awarded $24 Million Ammunition Contract

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), announced today that the Department of the Army - Headquarters, Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island, Ill., has modified an existing ammunition contract to add the production of 980,064 rounds of 20mm PGU-28A/B SAPHEI tactical cartridges and 20mm PGU-30A/B target-practice cartridges, in bulk-pack and linked configurations. The contract modifications are valued at $24 million, bringing the total value of the contract being modified to $35 million and more than 1.3 million rounds delivered since it was awarded in December 2001.

The award follows the successful completion of extensive and rigorous safety and reliability tests of more than 40,000 PGU 28 A/B cartridges conducted by the U.S. Air Force and Navy. Work will be performed at the company’s Marion, Ill., facility and is expected to be completed by January 2005.

The tactical PGU 28 A/B SAPHEI round has a multi-purpose design and pyrotechnic-delay fuze that provide the capability to defeat the full spectrum of targets in air-to-air and air-to-ground roles. The PGU 28 A/B will be in service with U.S. armed forces worldwide.

The 20mm PGU-28A/B - 30A/B Functional Pack is used in the AH-1 Cobra Helicopter for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, and the 20mm PGU-28A/B Bulk Pack ammunition is used in the F-14 and F/A-18 fixed-wing aircraft. Both the 20mm PGU-28A/B and PGU-30A/B were developed by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems under contract from the U.S. Navy, and represent the most advanced family of 20mm ammunition available.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems manufactures large- and medium-caliber ammunition and precision metal components; provides explosive load, assemble and pack services for a variety of tactical missile and rocket programs; and designs and produces shaped charge warheads and control actuator systems.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 57,000 people worldwide and had 2002 revenues of $13.8 billion. The company has leading market positions in land and amphibious combat systems, mission-critical information systems and technologies, shipbuilding and marine systems, and business aviation.
