Romania: Wolfowitz Says No Decision On New U.S. Bases
Bucharest, 19 May 2003 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz says the United States has not decided whether to set up permanent military bases in Romania.
Wolfowitz met with Romanian officials today during a one-day visit to Bucharest. He praised Romania for its support in the U.S.-led war in Iraq, during which U.S. troops used Romania's Constanta base to deploy to Iraq. But he said no decision has been made on whether to establish a permanent presence in Romania.
Romania and Bulgaria, both set to become NATO members in 2004, are both being considered as locations for new U.S. bases.
