Paraguay and EADS CASA sign a new contract

Madrid, 19 May 2003

The Paraguay Air Force has signed a contract with EADS CASA for the purchase of a C-212-400 military transport aircraft, and for the implementation of a logistic support programme to overhaul and rebuild (3) three C-212-200 military transport aircraft that were purchased by Paraguay two decades ago. Included also in this programme is the instruction and technical training of maintenance personnel belonging to the Paraguay Air Force, to perform overhaul, retrofit and maintenance operations of the airframe and systems.

The new aircraft is expected to be delivered by the end of 2003. Work on the other (3) three aircraft will commence at the beginning of June, to be delivered by the end of the year. This work will be carried out by EADS CASA personnel displaced to Paraguay, together with technicians from the Paraguay Air Force.

The (4) four aircraft will remain within TAM (Military Air Transport), together with another C-212 at present in service, to offer basically social services, to connect and assist people who live in remote areas with difficult access. The new C-212-400 is an aircraft with great versatility, and will be equipped with a kit that can transform it into an ambulance. Similar aircraft belonging to the Spanish Ejército del Aire carried out humanitarian aid during the Kosovo war.

The president of EADS CASA, Francisco Fernández Sáinz, said: “We are pleased that the Paraguay Air Force, which bought the first C-212 Aviocar two decades ago, has again deposited their trust in us. It fills us with satisfaction to have the opportunity to overhaul and rebuild three aircraft of a model that has marked a milestone in the history of our company, and that has contributed to help thousands of people around the world.”
