WASHINGTON -- The newest aircraft carrier, Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), earned a "clean sweep" during its Builder's Trials on May 5-8, 2003.

The Navy/industry team consisting of Northrop Grumman Newport News, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair Newport News successfully demonstrated the readiness of ship machinery, equipment and systems to Navy officials.

The ship is now ready for the Board of Inspection and Survey during Acceptance Trials May 27-29.

Despite days of dense fog, the crew successfully demonstrated hundreds of ship functions proving Reagan's performance capabilities.

Some of the improvements to the ship include the new bulbous bow for improved hydro-dynamics and buoyancy, the Integrated Communications and Advanced Network (ICAN), upgraded and reconfigured medical complex, and a reconfigured flight deck that utilizes only three arresting gear wires rather than four. The new bulbous bow, which is only slightly smaller in diameter than a 688-class submarine, allows the ship to steam more efficiently.

Northrop Grumman Newport News will deliver Reagan, the ninth ship of the Nimitz class, in June 2003. Its commissioning ceremony is scheduled for July 12, 2003.
