CORPS HEADQUARTERS TO UNDERTAKE MAJOR DEPLOYMENT EXERCISE
NATO HQ ARRC Press Release
13 May 2003
MÖNCHENGLADBACH, Germany - The Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps will test its quick entry skill by deploying forward elements to Northern Italy throughout May and early June to practice command and control of a NATO crisis response operation.
The exercise, named ARRCADE DEPLOYEX, takes place at airfields, ports and military installations in the vicinity of Aviano.
One focus of the exercise will be on the headquarters' ability to conduct reconnaissance and liaison for quick entry and reception of subordinate units. Another will be on the headquarters' ability to employ a forward operations center intricately linked to planners at its permanent headquarters via so called reachback technology.
A command post exercise from 9-13 June will simulate an operation to alleviate a humanitarian crisis in the fictional region of Mesopotamia. Lessons learned from this deployment exercise are expected to help shape training and organization of the future NATO Response Force.
As the first and most experienced of NATO's six high readiness force land headquarters, the ARRC has played a pivotal role in NATO military operations. Established in 1992, HQ ARRC led the first NATO ground deployment in history to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1995 when it commanded ground operations in NATO's Implementation Force. In early 1999, HQ ARRC again deployed to the Balkans, where it served as the initial-entry headquarters for the Kosovo Force in command of 50,000 multi-national soldiers. Some 450 army officers and enlisted soldiers representing 17 nations and assigned units from throughout NATO serve at ARRC headquarters.
