USS Duluth: Battle 'E' and Battle Ready

ABOARD USS DULUTH, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Duluth (LPD 6), the 38 year-old Austin-class Amphibious Transport Dock ship was recently earned Commander Amphibious Group (CPG) 3's medium command Battle Efficiency Award winner for 2002.

Duluth and the crew were notified of the honor while on station in the North Arabian Gulf. Sailors were pleased to be awoken and congratulated by their Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Gene Emmert.

"This award represents the hard work of every officer, chief and Sailor onboard," said Emmert. "Truly the best report card a ship in the U.S. Navy can earn. This crew is truly battle-ready, and I applaud all of you. Congratulations!"

The process of painting and displaying the traditional Battle "E" on the side of the ship started at first light the next day.

"Duluth has set the standard. Now comes the tough part.keeping it next year," said Rear Adm. Clyde Marsh, Commander Task Force 51. Marsh participated in the Battle "E" photo on the flight deck, and then gathered the crew to speak with them about their accomplishments and their current mission of Logistical Support for the Iraqi Gas Oil Platforms in the Northern Arabian Gulf.

Duluth is currently on a six-month deployment to the North Arabian Gulf in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the multinational coalition effort to liberate the Iraqi people. Duluth is currently participating in a support mission to provide habitability assistance required for Port Security Units 313 and 311 currently on Iraqi Gas and Oil platforms located in the North Arabian Gulf.
