USCG Cutter Bear Celebrates Anniversary

USCG District 5 Public Affairs

Release Date: 5/08/2003

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - On May 9, 2003, at 10 a.m., USCG Cutter Bear will be hosting her 20th anniversary celebration at ISC Portsmouth, Va. Bear was commissioned on February 4, 1983, as the first of thirteen 270-foot medium endurance cutters and has served as a premier drug interdiction and search and rescue asset ever since.

The present day Bear is named after one of the original Revenue Cutters that piled the rough waters of the Bering Sea for 40 years in the late 1800's.

Like her namesake, Cutter Bear is involved in a wide spectrum of missions, illustrating the versatile, multi-mission character of the Coast Guard and the cutter fleet. Since her commissioning, Cutter Bear has made 21 significant drug seizures and was recently outfitted with an Over the Horizon (OTH) fastboat and an armed HH-68 helicopter to further increase the success of drug interdiction. Cutter Bear is featured in the May issue of Government Executive Magazine.

The celebration will include remarks from Capt. A.E. Brooks, Coast Guard Atlantic Area Chief of Staff, with an onboard reception following the ceremony.
