Coast Guard seizes catch of local fishing vessel

BOSTON - Coast Guard crews seized the catch of a Newbedford, Mass.-based fishing vessel eight nautical miles inside Georges Bank Seasonal Closure Area Tuesday evening.
The crew of the Newbedford-based Coast Guard Cutter Campbell spotted the fishing vessel Endurance, a 107-foot commercial fishing vessel, fishing inside the closed area at 9:00 p.m. The Campbell's boarding team boarded the fishing vessel and found 36, 000 pounds of fish, primarily haddock and cod, on board.
The Endurance's catch was seized and the crew of the Campbell is escorting the vessel into New Bedford. Once in port, the National Marine Fisheries Service will assume the lead in the investigation. The catch, with an estimated value of $79, 000, will be sold at auction and the proceeds held in escrow pending final disposition of the case.
