GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- The first contingent of Seabees from Construction Batallion Unit (CBU) 414 deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, returned home May 6 to the waiting arms of family and friends. The unit, stationed at Naval Submarine Base New London, had eleven of its nearly 40 members deployed to the Middle East in February.

"We are happy and thankful to have this part of the 414 team safely back from a successful deployment," said Chief Warrant Officer Timothy Bennett, CBU 414 officer in charge. "Their 'Can Do' demonstrated the versatility of Seabees and our ability to build and fight anywhere, anytime."

Historically, CBU-414's primary mission is to support a deployed Fleet Hospital, but the unit is capable of performing a myriad of construction functions in theater. In support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, they worked as a public works department supporting Camp Coyote in Kuwait. The Seabees provided repair assistance within the camp and ensured Navy Fleet Hospital 15 equipment was maintained and in a continuous ready status. They also provided transportation for Fleet Hospital 15 personnel.
