DRC: Advance team prepares arrival of 2,000 Bangladeshi troops

KINSHASA, 2 May 2003 (IRIN) - An advance military team from Bangladesh arrived in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), on Wednesday ahead of the deployment of some 2,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers, Gen Mountaga Diallo, the force commander of the UN operation, told IRIN.

He said on Friday that the team was conducting a reconnaissance mission in preparation for the arrival of the troops in June. Uruguayan UN troops have already started to deploy to northeastern DRC, where repeated confrontations have erupted among rival armies, militias, and ethnic groups.

"Already some 800 have been deployed, but with the arrival of the [Bangladeshi] team, we should have close to 3,000. That's an entire brigade," he said.

Bangladesh has for many years been participating in UN peacekeeping missions, including service in Bosnia, Kuwait, Sierra Leone, and East Timor.
