Navy Awards Lockheed Martin $38 Million Contract for Laser Guided Training Rounds
ARCHBALD, PA, May 1st, 2003 -- Lockheed Martin has received a $38 million U.S. Navy contract to produce Laser Guided Training Rounds (LGTRs). The base-year contract is valued at approximately $13 million and two option years are estimated at $13 million and $12 million respectively.
Since 1990, Lockheed Martin has delivered to the U.S. Navy and customers in seven countries over 30,000 laser guided training rounds, which are used to train aircrews in place of more expensive laser guided bombs (LGBs). Delivery on this newest contract will begin in 2004. It is expected the LGTRs primarily will be used on Navy F/A-18 aircraft.
"This critical training system allows the U.S. Navy to practice realistically for combat operations without the expense of dropping tactical Laser Guided Bomb kits," observed Capt. Robert Wirt, Program Manager Conventional Strike Weapons, PMA-201, Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Md.
The Paveway II LGB kits manufactured by Lockheed Martin draw on key technologies from the training rounds but meet a more stringent performance specification for tactical weapons. The company currently is executing several Navy and U.S. Air Force contracts for LGB kits, which, like the LGTRs, are made at Lockheed Martin's facility in Archbald, Pa.
