ABOARD USS CONSTELLATION AT SEA -- The San Diego-based aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64), will pull in to Fremantle, Australia April 29th for the first port visit since departing the Arabian Gulf.
The Constellation Strike Group completed operations recently in the Arabian Gulf in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Aircraft from Carrier Air Wing 2, embarked on Constellation, flew more than 1,500 combat sorties and delivered more than 1 million pounds of ordnance on Iraqi targets. In addition, surface combatants of the Constellation Strike Group placed 408 Tomahawks precisely on their respective targets.
Commanded by Capt. John W. Miller, Constellation is home to nearly 5,000 Sailors and Marines and supports 73 aircraft. Additionally, the Constellation Strike Group, consisting of the carrier and six surface combatants, is commanded by Rear Adm. Barry M. Costello, Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group 1.
Constellation, also called "America's Flagship," left San Diego Nov. 2, 2002, for their scheduled six-month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism. This is Constellation's 21st and final deployment after 41 years of commissioned service.
