WASHINGTON -- Three Naval Sea Systems Command field activities were recognized this week as runners-up in the Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards competition for 2002.

Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Indian Head (Md.) Division was runner-up in the Environmental Quality (Industrial Installation) category; NSWC Crane (Ind.) Division was runner-up in the Cultural Resources Management (Individual/Team) category and Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport (R.I.) Division was runner-up in the Pollution Prevention (Non-Industrial Installation) category.

"The quality of [this year's] competition was high, an indication of the effort our Navy and Marine Corps team contributes every day," Acting Secretary of the Navy Hanford T. Johnson wrote in a congratulatory message to the Fleet.

During the past two years, Indian Head Division developed alternatives for open burning using Confined Burn and Molten Salt technologies; decreased hazardous waste, wastewater, and air emissions with 67 percent solvent reduction using the Twin Screw Extruder; and diverted 1,197 tons of solid waste from landfills, avoiding tipping fees of $73,000.

In addition, Indian Head reduced groundwater use for steam generation by 100 million gallons annually by installing a River Water Filtration Plant, and decontaminated the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant in McGregor, Texas resulting in nearly 9,000 acres of land and 500 buildings being returned to the town of McGregor.

Crane Division was recognized for accomplishments in cultural resources management as a result of implementing their Archaeological Resources Survey Plan (ARSP). The ARSP was designed through the Glenn Black Lab of Archaeology at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana and is a scientific predictive model for identifying the probable locations of archaeological resources. Crane will endeavor to survey the facility based on the methodology borne from the ARSP, including actual fieldwork. All survey endeavors are coordinated through the State of Indiana.
