WASHINGTON -- The Navy this month took delivery of its newest ship, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Mustin, (DDG 89) from Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Ingalls Operation in Pascagoula, Miss.

Mustin, the 39th ship in the Arleigh Burke class and the 18th built by Ingalls, was delivered nearly two months ahead of schedule, following sea trials in December 2002.

"That trial was extremely successful and is a testimony to the fine craftsmanship and the teamwork between the government and Northrop Grumman Ship Systems," said Capt. Phil Johnson, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair Pascagoula. "She's a sound vessel, well constructed and ready."

DDG 89 honors the legacy of the four Mustin family members who were Naval officers, whose service spanned nearly a century. Cmdr. Ann Claire Phillips, an Annapolis, Md. native, is the ship's commissioning commanding officer.

"The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived," Phillips said. "She's finally ours. All we have to do is do our best and uphold the spirit of the Mustin family and we will be the best."

Mustin will depart Pascagoula in July 2003 and join the U.S. Pacific Fleet during commissioning ceremonies July 26, 2003, in San Diego, Calif.
