General Dynamics Awarded $31.5 Million Contract for Intelligent Munitions System

ARLINGTON, Va. – The U.S. Army's TACOM-ARDEC Picatinny Center for Contracting and Commerce, on behalf of the U.S. Army's Office of the Program Manager for Close Combat Systems (OPM/CCS) at Picatinny Arsenal, has awarded General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems a $31.5 million contract for the Increment I Technology Development phase of the Intelligent Munitions System (IMS) program. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems is a business unit in the General Dynamics Information Systems and Technology group.

IMS, which is part of the Army's Future Combat System, consists of networked, multi-functional nodes that work together to detect targets and command advanced munitions. IMS enables the maneuver commander to accurately locate and continuously track targets; autonomously process intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance information; and use advanced munitions to engage threats. By employing a smart sensor network, IMS supports the dynamically changing battlespace through a set of sensors connected by a self-healing, ad hoc wireless network.

The purpose of this phase of the program is to develop and demonstrate technology in order to prove key technical and operational issues. General Dynamics will use brassboard prototypes, simulations, and models to verify both the system hardware and software architecture, requirements, design, and performance characteristics.

"General Dynamics takes a systems-level networking approach to unattended ground sensors in order to provide superior situational awareness and real-time sensor-to-shooter linkage," said Lou Von Thaer, vice president and general manager of Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems at General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems. "As a result, we can offer the Army a solution that will allow for more precise targeting, robust communications, and increased munitions effectiveness. Networked sensors represent a real advance in net-centric technologies and concepts, and they support the combat maneuver, fire support, and intelligence and electronic warfare missions of the Objective Force."

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems combines command and control, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and information operations businesses to create command information, intelligence and surveillance solutions. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems provides joint, interoperable and integrated mission solutions.

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 57,000 people worldwide and had 2002 revenues of $13.8 billion. The company has leading market positions in land and amphibious combat systems, mission-critical information systems and technologies, shipbuilding and marine systems, and business aviation.
