USS HARRY S TRUMAN Battle Group return and USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT deployment rationale
A Letter From Admiral Robert J. Natter, U.S. Navy Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet
24 April 2003
The Navy recently announced the May 2003 return of USS Harry S. Truman Battle Group. Some family members have recently inquired as to reasons for bringing the USS Harry S. Truman Battle Group home before USS Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group. Both of these Atlantic Fleet Battle Groups recently participated in combat operations in Iraq. The following information details pertinent information that was considered in the decision-making process:
- The Truman Battle Group deployed on 5 December 2002 - 32 days prior to the Roosevelt battle group, which left for deployment on 6 January 2003.
- Returning to Norfolk before the end of May, Truman Battle Group's deployment length will fall a few a few days short of 6 months.
- USS Harry S Truman is scheduled for a maintenance period (a restricted repair availability) shortly after her return. Subsequently, the ship will begin preparing for its next deployment in 2004.
- Hopefully, Roosevelt Battle Group will be able to return home shortly from its deployment. Like USS Harry S Truman, USS Theodore Roosevelt will also receive a maintenance availability, but it is scheduled to commence early next year. Theodore Roosevelt's next scheduled deployment is well after Harry S. Truman's next deployment.
The Navy recognizes the hard work, dedication and sacrifices of our all Sailors during the global war on terrorism - and especially the men and women of the Roosevelt Battle Group, who participated magnificently in both Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. We know these deployments have been longer than those in peace-time. We appreciate the continued understanding and strong support of family members and hope to bring our Sailors and ships home as soon as possible.
