NAVAL AIR FACILITY ATSUGI, Japan (NNS) -- Originally in the Arabian Gulf flying in support of Operation Southern Watch, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 Sailors have met head-on the increased demands of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"It's good to see that we train like we fight," Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class Derek Morris said. "It's been a really smooth transition."
Embarked aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), the Gauntlets flew nearly 400 hours in March, logging the majority of thee hours in combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The dedication and expertise of the maintainers enabled the Gauntlet Prowlers to patrol the skies over Iraq around the clock.
The Gauntlet maintainers were selected as the 2002 "Prowler Maintenance Squadron of the Year," and pilots appreciate the heroic efforts of these Sailors the most. "I've always been proud to take a Gauntlet aircraft over the beach," said Lt. j.g. Sean Hays.
The Gauntlets and their fellow Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5 squadrons hold the distinction of being the only forward-deployed air wing in the fleet.
"It is never easy to leave friends and loved ones behind," said Lt. James King, summing up the thoughts of many Gauntlet Sailors. "But having the privilege to serve my country when I'm needed makes it all worthwhile."
