CORONA, Calif. -- Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona Division recently supported Operation Iraqi Freedom by assisting a Marine Corps unit prepare for deployment to Southwest Asia.
A team from Corona Division flew to Chicago to help Marine Wing Communications Squadron 48 (MWCS-48), a reserve unit at Great Lakes, which had significantly accelerated the deployment of its mobile Calibration Facility (CF) to Southwest Asia to support current operations in the region.
The CF is a mobile, portable calibration laboratory that can rapidly be placed anywhere Marines are deployed to support test equipment required for maintaining weapon systems. The CF allows quick turnaround for measuring and testing equipment that is urgently needed on or near the battlefield.
A crucial part of the CF is the automated laboratory management system known as the Computer Assisted Logistics and Calibration System (CALTECS). In order to meet the new deployment date, the Corona team rapidly installed both the computer network required to run CALTECS and also the necessary software to track the calibrations, collect calibration data, and make the necessary calibration procedures and other technical information available to the calibration technician in the CF.
"When we landed in Chicago late Tuesday night we didn't know we had less than 48 hours to complete this mission," said Tama Stevens of Corona Division. "We unboxed the computer equipment, put it on the network, loaded the lab management software, configured the printers, and tested everything in one day."
The next day, Stevens and Master Sgt. Joel Seguin, a team leader from Marine Corps Base Quantico, packed up everything, and strapped it down in the Calibration Facility in less than three hours. They also trained the deploying Marines on the system while installing the network.
While their actions had an impact on supporting the warfighter, Stevens said she didn't give it much thought.
"I was just doing my every day job," she said. "I was not thinking about the impact of my actions. I am proud to say that we accomplished our mission. There is nothing that I wouldn't do for these young men and women that are protecting my freedom during peace or wartime."
