ARLINGTON, VA (NNS) -- The Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) Director's office announced April 7 that the first joint forces application has been certified to operate on NMCI desktops.

The Department of Defense Standard Procurement System (SPS) software package integrates acquisition, logistics and financial management within one end-to-end enterprise business system. The application was approved for use on NMCI desktops recently following completion of the certification process administered by the EDS-lead Information Strike Force (ISF).

During the certification process, applications undergo testing for compatibility with Windows 2000, compliance with Department of Defense and Department of the Navy firewall policies and security rules, as well as compatibility with other aspects of the NMCI architecture. Once certified, authorized users operating on NMCI seats may access applications.

The Navy, the EDS-led ISF and American Management Systems the application developer, have all worked diligently together to ensure that the commercial off the shelf application could be configured to work within the boundaries of NMCI. The application reconfiguration was required to resolve policy and permissions issues that restrict access to folders within the system. Once the required policies and permissions were set and written into the program, the application moved into the final testing phase for certification by the ISF.

A separate feature of the application, which is only necessary for individuals required to use a reporting functionality, is still undergoing certification. Many users do not require the reporting tool to use SPS effectively. Those users who rely on the feature for mission completion will utilize quarantined workstations to meet mission requirements until certification of that feature is complete.
