RWANDA: Tribunals for Rwanda and former Yugoslavia increase cooperation

NAIROBI, 8 April 2003 (IRIN) - The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, are planning to establish a joint telecommunications network, the ICTR said in a statement on 4 April.

The telecommunications network would make it posible to broadcast trial proceedings and have video-conferences between The Hague, Arusha and Kigali, the ICTR said. The network would lead to the development of a common database of ICTR and ICTY decisions, available to legal personnel and the public.

The statement said the ICTR and the ICTY were also working towards harmonising the legal aid systems in both tribunals, linking their public information services, and designing a common terminology database.

Adama Dieng, the registrar of the ICTR, and Hans Holthuis, his counterpart at the ICTY, said during a meeting in Arusha that they hoped increased cooperation would play an important role in achieving common goals, as entrusted to the tribunals by the international community.
