U.S. European Command Returns Land to Government of Iceland

Date: Mar. 28, 2003

UNITED STATES EUROPEAN COMMAND, Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany -- The Iceland Defense Force will formally return a 355-acre unused portion of the Agreed Area and Hvalfjordur (Whale Bay) Fuel Depot to the Government of Iceland.

Hvalfjordur Fuel Depot was completed in 1968 using North Atlantic Treaty Organization funds and was operated by the U.S. Navy. The site was removed from the NATO inventory in October 2001.

The 355-acres of unused portions of Agreed Area will also be returned to the Government of Iceland. The Agreed Area comprises over 20,000 acres of land designated for U.S. Military use in Iceland. The parcel of land is no longer required for use by the Iceland Defense Force.

The U.S. Government is committed to maintaining its defense agreement, as Iceland remains a vital ally and a key regional partner with the United States. Coordination with Iceland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the local community was conducted at all levels prior to this announcement.
