BAE SYSTEMS To Lead Romania Frigates Regeneration
25 Mar 2003
BAE Systems has been nominated as prime contractor to manage the regeneration and upgrade of two ex-Royal Navy Type 22 frigates being transferred to Romania under a government-level agreement. The agreement covers a phased approach. Phase 1, worth 116m will be undertaken in the UK and Phase 2 in Romania.
The contract, awarded by the UK MoD, is being managed through the Customer Solutions & Support (CS&S) group within BAE Systems.
CS&S's Land & Sea Managing Director, Rory Fisher, comments:
"This is an exciting opportunity for the business to apply its naval engineering and prime contracting skills to such a significant international contract. CS&S is working closely with UK industry to ensure that the best capabilities are brought together to deliver the frigates to our customer in a timely, cost effective manner."
"We are also working closely with the MoD and Romanian authorities to define and plan the development of the necessary in-country support infrastructure, the involvement of Romanian industry and the transfer of technology and we are looking forward to a long and successful relationship with the Romanian Navy."
In the first phase CS&S will be working with its two Portsmouth-based joint ventures Fleet Support Limited (FSL) and Flagship Training (both owned 50/50 with VT Group). FSL will carry out the regeneration work at Portsmouth naval base and Flagship will train the Romanian crews to operate the vessels under the Royal Navy's FOST (Flag Officer Ships Training) programme.
Notes to Editors:
Customer Solutions & Support's Land & Sea unit is 'UK Lead Contractor' to the MoD's Disposal Services Agency for ship sales. In this role we can offer support for the reactivation, modification and training elements of ex-Royal Naval vessel sales and are required when doing so to seek best value for money through competing and project-managing industrial activities including long-term support of vessels in their new roles. In the case of the Romania programme we have also taken on the role of prime contractor.
An initial government-level agreement was announced by the UK Minister for Defence Procurement, Lord Bach and the Romania Minister for Defence Ioan Mircea Pascu on January 14.
HMS Coventry, which was decommissioned a year ago, will be docked by FSL in August 2003 and is scheduled to arrive in Romania towards the end of 2004. HMS London, withdrawn from service three years ago, will enter dock in March 2004 with delivery scheduled for May 2005.
