INTRO: Ethnic fighting in Nigeria has prompted more foreign oil companies to shut down facilities in the Niger river delta. V-O-A's Luis Ramirez reports from our West Africa bureau in Abidjan.

TEXT: The giant British-Dutch oil company Shell evacuated more oil facilities in Nigeria's Niger River Delta on Monday, citing concerns over the safety of its employees.

Officials say Shell's decision cuts the company's oil production in Nigeria by more than 300-thousand barrels a day.

American oil company ChevronTexaco closed down nearly all of its operations in the West African country on Sunday.

Officials say the shutdown of operations by major oil companies has cut oil production by one third in the world's sixth largest oil producing country.

The violence has pitted ethnic Ijaws against Nigerian government forces. Ijaws launched their attacks against oil facilities earlier this month to press demands for greater political representation. (Signed)
