PORT HUENEME, Calif. - Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division culminated an 18-month long effort in the successful completion of combat systems support to USS Nimitz,/I> (CVN 68) during the ship's recent Inter Deployment Training Cycle.

Nimitz's Commanding Officer Capt. Bob Gilman cited the efforts of the men and women of Port Hueneme Division as "herculean." He also acknowledged the "everlasting, positive" impact the Port Hueneme team had on the combat readiness of Nimitz.

"As we depart in these uncertain times, we depart with a combat systems suite second to none, and more importantly, we depart with highly skilled and trained technicians, thanks to the absolutely superb training the Port Hueneme personnel have provided over the past 18 months," stated Gilman.

Port Hueneme Division began its support for Nimitz during the ship's Refueling Complex Overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding from 1998 to 2001. The Port Hueneme team supported Nimitz in the areas of training, maintenance, logistics, and combat system testing and focused on several combat system elements, including the Advance Combat System Direction System, Cooperative Engagement Capability, Ship Self-Defense System, and NATO Sea Sparrow Surface Missile (NSSMS).

Due to Port Hueneme Division's support, Nimitz completed nine successful Combat System Ship Qualification Trials (CSSQT) and engineering at-sea events, resulting in full CSSQT certification. During these underway events, Nimitz also successfully completed eight ship defense missile firing scenarios, which earned the ship the "Clean Sweep" award from the NSSMS Program Office.
